DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — State Public Health Officials announced that mosquito-borne diseases West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis risk levels have increased in multiple towns throughout the state.
168 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus since June 17th including a sample from Deerfield, although no human cases have been confirmed in Massachusetts this year.
Public Health Officials recommend removing standing water near homes, where mosquitos tend to lay eggs. To prevent mosquito bites it is recommended to use insect repellent, wear long sleeve shirts and pants, and avoid peak mosquito times outside.
