MONTAGUE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A $100,000 grant has been awarded to the Montague Center Water District, MCWD, to study and mitigate PFAS, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, in the water supply.
The grant was awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, under the federal program for Emerging Contaminant in Small or Disadvantaged Communities.
According to the town of Montague, the MCWD consists of approximately 2.7 miles of water main with a 63,000 gallon standpipe fed from a single groundwater source.
With the grant, the MCWD will be hiring a multi-disciplinary engineering firm through a Request for Proposals, RFP, process to provide an evaluation of three options for addressing PFAS that include capital, operation, and maintenance costs for each option.
The options include treatment of existing groundwater supply to within regulator limits, establishing a new well for the MCWD, and a potential permanent metered interconnection with the Turners Falls Water District so the existing groundwater source can be decommissioned.
The town will be accepting bids for the project through September 12th.
