Leverett Code Red system hacked, data stolen

LEVERETT, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Leverett Code Red system was hacked recently and the emergency communication system has been out of service since, according to the Leverett Selectboard who released a statement Thursday.

Data was stolen during the hacking and the Selectboard says it was limited to contact name, address, email, phone number, and associated password for resident profiles in Code Red.

They are asking residents to change any related passwords immediately. The new platform is expected to be up and running shortly.

From the Leverett Town Officials:

Update for Leverett Residents and Leverett Elementary School contacts on the Code Red Mass Messaging System from the Leverett Selectboard:
The Code Red system was hacked a couple weeks ago and the system has been out of service since that time. The town has become aware that data in the system has been stolen and may be republished or reused by the hackers. The data stolen is limited to the contact name, address, email address, phone numbers and/or associated passwords used to create resident profiles for alerts within Code Red. If you used the same password for your resident Code Red account as you used for any other personal or business accounts, please change the passwords to those other accounts immediately. We are asking you to do this for your own security and personal privacy. This affects only those residents who created their own free Code Red account with their own unique password.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Margie McGinnis at 413-548-9699 or townadministrator@leverett.ma.us. Code Red support is not set up to directly receive calls or inquiries from residents.
The new Code Red is estimating that our resident data from March 31, 2025 will be reloaded onto the town’s new message sending platform soon and at that point it can be used again by the town and you will be able to get into your resident account and update your contact information if needed.
Thank you. It is unfortunate that this has happened during a period when Leverett has had events that needed to be communicated to residents and we join you in hoping the system is working again soon.
Sincerely,
Selectboard Members: Patricia Duffy, Jed Proujansky, Thomas Hankinson
Administrator: Margie McGinnis
